Botox for Hyperhidrosis
Botox® is a brand name for botulinum toxin type A made by Allergan Pharmaceuticals. Botox® is a medicine that has been used for more than 30 years to treat many medical conditions, including muscle spasms in various parts of the body. More recently it has received publicity for its cosmetic applications. Botox® is a natural purified protein that is able to temporarily block the nervous impulse that makes the sweat glands work. Studies have shown that treating the armpits, hands, feet, and face with botulinum toxin is safe and effective. The effect lasts between 4 and 12 months and most people get at least and 80% reduction in sweating during that time. The treatment is administered by a trained health professional – a doctor or nurse. The Botox® is given by multiple tiny injections (a bit like acupuncture), into the skin where the sweat glands lie. You can return to your usual activities immediately after your treatment, although saunas and intensive exercise are usually best left until the next day. This treatment will not cure the problem and its effect will wear off slowly after a period of months. Most people who have the treatment find that it changes their lifestyle dramatically. They are able to wear a much wider selection of clothing, and their self confidence improves. Botox approved by the American FDA for the treatment of Hyperhidrosis. How Botox® works
Botox® temporarily stops the message between the nerves and the sweat gland in the area that has been treated - underarms for example. After a period of months the message system is restored and the sweating will begin to return.
